The dissolution of the Soviet empire in Eastern Europe and the subsequent dismantling of the Soviet Union during the years 1989-1991 gave rise to a plethora of free and independent states.  Among these newly-sovereign nations were the former Baltic republics of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, all of which were forcibly incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1940.  For over 50 years, the Communist regime of Russia imposed its will upon the Baltic peoples with little regard or value for the cultural and historical identity of its people.  All of this began to change, however, during the reign of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev (1985-1991), who began to renounce the use of force to achieve political objectives in the foreign policy arena.  His economic and political reforms seemed to signal a willingness to recognize limited autonomy for the many republics that constituted the USSR.  Rejecting limited autonomy, however, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia led the way in separating fully from Moscow's control.

The Baltic States have since experienced a true renaissance of development.  The capitals of Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn are now the beautiful centerpieces of awakened national consciousness and cultural rediscovery. Westerners and indeed people from around the world are now flocking to these lands, which were more or less off-limits since the end of World War II.  Few travel experiences are more exciting than witnessing a people embrace democracy after decades of totalitarian rule while seeking to define its identity in a rapidly changing environment.  Breathing the air of liberty for the first time is a powerfully intoxicating source of tremendous creative energy. It is precisely this remarkable vitality that makes travel to the Baltic States in the 21st Century so compellingly fresh and alluring. The ArawjoTours, LLC special Baltic Beauties Tour 2016 is designed to give you insight into the cultures of three impressive nations whose history is marked alternatively by glory and turbulence.  For a full description of this tour package, please see the features below:
