No longer satellites of the former Soviet Union, Bulgaria and Romania are independent states with rich histories, beautiful natural scenery, friendly people and excellent food. And, with Romania, let's not forget the legend of Dracula and it's mesmerizing impact on all those that are transfixed by the blood-letting of the middle ages and the mystical mountains of Transylvania. We will take you to some of the most important and beautiful locations in these impressive areas. From Sophia to Sibiu, we will stay in ancient towns and cities, drive through spectacular countryside and visit towering castles, fortresses and churches that have stood for centuries as monuments to the past. Day 1 - Departure from USA to Sophia, Bulgaria
Day 2 - Sophia, Bulgaria
Welcome to the capital of Bulgaria – Sofia! Founded seven thousand years ago, Sofia is the second oldest city in Europe. After we meet and greet our tour manager at the airport, we will embark on a sightseeing tour of the city. Highlights include St. Sophia Church, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the former Royal Palace, the Parliament and other places of interest. Later we will check into our hotel and enjoy time to relax and have dinner on our own. Overnight in Sophia.
Day 3 - Sophia - Rila Monastery - Plovdiv
After breakfast at the hotel we will continue our journey with a transfer to Plovdiv. On the way, we will make a stop to Rila Monastery, one of the most important historical monuments in Bulgaria. We will admire the exquisitely detailed artwork under the arches, and then visit the beautiful church with colorful frescoes located at the center of the Monastery. We will then continue on our journey with accommodations in Plovdiv. After checking into our hotel, enjoy the balance of the day at leisure.
Day 4 - Plovdiv
After breakfast, we will enjoy a morning sightseeing tour of Plovdiv, which is the second largest city in Bulgaria and is famous for its ancient and diverse culture. Among the highlights of this city include the Old Town and the Roman Amphitheatre. The afternoon and evening are free to enjoy this lovely city. Overnight in Plovdiv.
Day 5 - Plovdiv- Kazanlak - Veliko Tarnovo
After breakfast at the hotel, we will continue on our journey through Bulgaria to the Valley of the Roses and the town of Kazaniak. There, we will visit the famous Thracian Tomb, dating to the 4th century B.C. and to the Ethnographic Museum. We will also partake in some rose liquor and jam tasting. We will continue to Veliko Tarnovo, known as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The late afternoon and evening are free for leisure. Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo.
Day 6 - Veliko Tarnovo - Ruse - Bucharest
After a breakfast at the hotel, we will embark on sightseeing tour of Veliko Turnovo and visit the most unconquerable Bulgarian fortress of the 12th – 14th century – Tsarevets. Our journey continues with a transfer for lunch atlocal restaurant in Ruse, a city of imposing belle époque architecture and neatly trimmed leafy squares, as if a little chunk of Vienna had broken off and floated down the Danube. Later we will board our coach and say goodbye to Bulgaria and head for Bucharest, Romania. Upon arrival, we will check in to our charming and centrally located hotel and have some time at leisure until the evening where you will be able to have dinner on your own.
Day 7 - Bucharest
After breakfast at our hotel we will meet our coach and local guide and embark on a city tour of Bucharest. The tour includes the Revolution Square and a guided tour of the Parliament Palace. Later, we will take a stroll in the lovely Village Museum, one of the world's most interesting open air museums with centuries-old original peasant households from all parts of Romania. Afterwards we will transfer back to our hotel where we will have the remainder of the day at leisure with dinner on our own. Overnight in Bucharest.
Day 8 - Bucharest - Sinaia - Bran - Brasov (Transylvania)
After breakfast, we will depart for the mountains of Transylvania. We will first stop in Sinaia, which is a small and beautiful mountain resort known as "The Carpathian Pearl." There, we will stop at Peles Castle, formerly the summer residence of the Royal family, and the Sinaia Monastery. We will then drive through the village of Bran to Brasov to see the so-called Dracula's Castle, where Dracula was imprisoned before he was taken to Budapest. Bran Castle is home to a rich collection of Romanian and foreign furniture and sits atop a 200 ft. tall rock overlooking the picturesque village of Bran. After our stop in Bran, we will continue to Brasov, the largest city in Translyvania. Dracula was betrayed here by the rich merchants and ended up imprisoned for 12 years in Pesta and Visegrad by his cousin, Mathias Corvinus, King of Hungry. Evening free in Brasov. Overnight in Brasov.
Day 9 - Brasov - Poiana Brasov
After breakfast at the hotel, we will enjoy a morning walking tour through the marvelous historical old town centre of Brasov--also referred to as the "Transylvanian Gate"--and visit the Black Church, one of the largest Gothic churches in southern Europe. Other highlights include the St. Nicholas Church and the Council Square. Afternoon free to enjoy Brasov. In the evening, we will visit Romania's best mountain resort, Poiana Brasov, where we will enjoy a traditional dinner with wine tasting. Overnight in Brasov.
Day 10 - Brasov - Sighisoara - Sibui
This morning we will meet our guide and coach and depart Brasov by driving through the picturesque Transylvanian Plateau with its Saxon villages and old fortifications. With its dazzling well-preserved medieval architecture and fortifications, Sighisoara is the birthplace of the famous Vlad the Impaler. We will enjoy a walking tour that includes the two squares of the Citadel (Upper Town), then Scholars' Staircase, House with Antler, Tower with Clock, the Torture Chamber and the Weapon Museum.
We will also enjoy a lunch in the house where Vlad Dracula was born in 1431 and lived to the age of four.
Later we will reach Sibiu, one of the most important medieval Saxon towns. We will have a short orientation tour on the way to our hotel. Overnight in Sibiu.
Day 11 - Sibiu - Bucharest
In the morning we will leave Sibiu via coach towards Bucharest. On the way we will proceed along one of the most scenic routes of the country, the Olt River Valley. We will cross the mountains from Transylvania and enjoy dramatic views of the Olt River and spectacular Middle Carpathians. We will stop at Cozia Monastery to get acquainted with the Brancovan architecture and decorations. Later we will continue to Bucharest where we will have the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 12 - Transfer to airport after breakfast for return flight to USA.
