Southwestern France--an entire region in the beautiful country of France that has heretofore been totally unexplored by the ArawjoTours Global Nomads, is the perfect destination for a late spring tour during the 2016 travel season.

Our journey will begin in Bordeaux, the capital of Aquitaine, which is situated in the heart of wine country.  Using this major cultural center as our base, we will spend four leisurely nights in Bordeaux, from which we will enjoy several exciting excursions, including a tour of the city itself, a full day wine-tasting jaunt in the countryside and a half day visit to the famous caves of Lascaux.  The original caves, which contain remarkable Paleolithic paintings first created about 20, 000 years ago, have been closed to visitors for some years, but French authorities have  reproduced the images on the original caves in what is known as Lascaux II.  Sot it is at least possible to get a very good idea of what the Paleolithic artists were drawing so many thousands of years ago.

Following our fascinating stay in Bordeaux, we will next travel to the one of the most famous seaside ports in the world--the resort town of Biarritz, which is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean not far from the Spanish border.  Made famous by the likes of Napoleon III, Queen Victoria, Edward VII and Edward VIII, Biarritz was once a jet-setter's paradise and is today one of the most fashionable and picturesque settlements in southwestern France.  We will spend three nights in this lovely town enjoying the local culture and savoring the cuisine of Basque country.  Apart from a half day guided sightseeing tour of Biarritz, you will have the rest of the time to relax and to discover the beaches, shops, restaurants and nightlife at your own pace.  The concierge desk at the hotel will also be available to you if you wish to plan any individual excursions outside of the city.

Saving the best for last, the remaining three nights of our journey to southwestern France will be spent in the medieval fortress city of Carcassonne.  Set against the background of the Pyrenees, Carcassonne is one of the most magical, fairy-tale-like cities in all of Europe.  Floodlit at night, Carcossonne's fortifications and ancient monuments dating to the Visigoths of the 5th century and extending through the 16th century are among some of the most dramatically situated  ancient remains on the European continent.  During our half day tour of the town, we will visit the heart of Carcassonne, known as the medieval Cite, and will explore the Chateau Comtal, a restored 12th-century fortress.  We will also stop at the Bastique St-Nazaire, an 11th-century cathedral that houses one of the oldest organs in southwestern France, dating to the 16th-century.  In your free time, you may opt to participate in an optional tour of the nearby town of Toulouse, formerly the capital of Languedoc, which is today a cosmopolitan center rooted in the wealth and artistic achievement of the Renaissance.

This ArawjoTours Southwestern France 2016 Tour offers a great opportunity for Francophiles to visit three areas that are not heavily or regularly visited by typical American tour groups, which tend to concentrate on Paris, Provence and the Code d' Azure.  The beauty of this package is that it can be satisfying BOTH to newcomers to France AND to repeat visitors of France who want to broaden their knowledge and experience in this great country.  We hope that you will join us on this very scenic journey.
