NEW YEAR'S EVE IN LISBON, PORTUGAL

With almost 300 days of sunshine every year, and a mild climate, Lisbon is the perfect destination for an ArawjoTours New Year's Eve getaway.  The Portuguese inhabitants of Lisbon are among the friendliest in Europe, and they are always eager to share their city with foreigners.  The capital of Portugal since 1255, Lisbon's history is long and impressive, and despite a devastating fire in 1755, it was rebuilt in an elegant 18th century style that is as pleasing today as it was 250 years ago.  Home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such at the St. Jeronimos Monastery and the Belem Tower, Lisbon has much to offer, including some of the freshest and most delicious fish in the world, a plethora of Old World coffee shops and cafes (some of them over 200 years old), a number of fascinating historic neighborhoods worth exploring, such as the Moorish Alfama quarter, dominated by the Castle of St. George, and the lively Chiado and Bairro Alto districts, famous for their bustling nightlife and stirring sounds of Fado music emanating from the many musical venues and clubs that characterize these areas.  In addition to great food and wine (Portugal is famous for its delicious port wines), enriching sightseeing and impressive entertainment opportunities, Lisbon is also located close to some beautiful areas outside the city that are easily accessible by public transportation.  The lovely seaside town of Cascais is only a short train ride from downtown Lisbon and is a great place to spend a day and to enjoy a delicious meal in the evening.  Cascais was once a resort for the Portuguese Royal Family.  Another fabulous place to visit, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is Sintra, also not far from Lisbon.  Sintra is known for its many 19th-century architectural monuments including the impressive Pena National Palace.  Yet another Portuguese UNESCO town worth visiting is Evora, which is famous for its well-preserved medieval center and its Roman ruins.  The list goes on and on, as Lisbon is a fantastic base from which to visit these remarkable places. And, to top things off, Lisbon is an extremely affordable place, more so than many other noteable European destinations.  It is in fact a bargain destination, a place where you can have a great time without depleting your pocketbook.  On New Year's Lisbon's central squares and riverside restaurants and bars come alive with excitement and music, as everyone awaits the magnificent fireworks celebration when the clock strikes midnight.  To share the joy of ringing in the New Year with the jolly Portuguese in their gem of a city will no doubt be a phenomenal experience.  So join us on this affordable getaway and see for yourself why Lisbon has become one of the most exciting European capitals to visit.
