New Year's Eve in Zurich, Switzerland plus Lucerne 2019

Several years ago, ArawjoTours offered its first trip to magnificent Switzerland.  In addition to sharing this journey with many of our Global Nomads, I was fortunate also to be traveling with my wife, Catherine, son, Ian, and some very close friends.  On this first visit to Switzerland, we used Lucerne as our base and purchased multi-day rail passes, giving us access to the whole country at a very reasonable price.  Winding through the mountains on an efficient, world-class rail system, we were impressed with the stunning beauty of Switzerland and its many storybook towns and cities.  We visited Interlaken, Grindelwald, Jungfraujoch (the highest railway station in Europe at well over 11,000 feet!) Wengen, and, of course Zurich.  We spent a whole day in Zurich, which was only a short 50 minute ride from Lucerne, and were struck by the picturesque stetting,  energy and cultural sophistication of Switzerland's largest and richest city.  At the end of a wonderful self-guided excursion to Zurich, I vowed one day to return to this glorious city to give it the attention it deserves.  And there are few better times to do this than over New Year's Eve, when the city is in full celebration mode, with snow-covered mountains, a glistening lake, holiday lights, medieval buildings and local merrymakers creating an atmosphere of joyous harmony between nature and man.

Located on a broad valley on the northern shore of Lake Zurich, bisected by the River Limmat, and surrounded by the wooded slopes of nearby hills, Zurich is quite simply one of the prettiest cities in Europe.  With its many quays radiating from the shores of the river and lake and lined with medieval buildings, cathedrals, quaint boutiques, cafes, nightclubs and restaurants, Zurich is ideal for exploring on foot.   It is large enough to offer everything one would want and expect from an important urban center--art and history museums, concert halls, inspiring and thought-provoking architecture, world class shopping along the legendary Bahnhofstrasse--but small enough to still feel like a manageable town, especially when visiting some of the wonderful neighborhoods of the city, such as Altstadt (Old Town), the cobbled pedestrian district of Niederdorf, the residential area of Seefeld, with its belle Epoque architecture and grandiose Operahouse, and even Zuri West, the former industrial quarter which has now been transformed into one of the city's trendiest hot spots.  To get a panoramic view of Zurich, all you need to do is to take the 20 minute train ride to delightful Uetliberg, referred to as the "top of Zurich' at nearly 3000 feet.  At Uetliberg, you may go on a popular two hour hike along the ridge of the mountain or simply have a coffee or a delicious meal while marveling at the backdrop of the city and snowy Alps in the distance.  And if discovering the city and the nearby environs isn't enough to fill your time, you can, of course, buy the aforementioned multi-day rail pass (visit www.swiss-pass.ch) and travel throughout Switzerland, including to such places as Lucerne, Bern, Geneva, and, if you are ambitious, even Zermatt (as well as the places noted above).  There are few countries in the world in which the bulk of the most interesting and important sightseeing locations can be accessed within a day.

New Year's Eve in Zurich--or Silversterzauber as it is known to the Swiss--is noteworthy for its awesome fireworks display that occurs over Lake Zurich after midnight.  The prelude to this spectacular event is the lively activity centered along the Limmat and the lake's basin and which includes live musical performances, a plethora of food and drink stands and various forms of entertainment.  The clubs and restaurants offer dancing and dining packages and there are even gala dinner cruises on the lake.  The city is a buzz with life as over 100,000 people gather together to ring in the New Year.  Join us on this magical trip to Zurich in the heart of winter, 2019-2020.  Like me and my family, I am sure that you will come to appreciate Switzerland as a highly rewarding and truly memorable travel destination.
