One City Wonder:  Amsterdam, Netherlands (October, 2019)

Amsterdam is city whose very name is synonymous with toleration.  Whether it be legalized prostitution or the decriminalization of "soft" drugs such as marijuana, Amsterdam has a reputation for accepting what others believe should be forbidden.  A visit to this remarkable city will never leave you indifferent; rather, it is likely to cause you to re-think your own prejudices and axioms of truth and to ground them on a new foundation of education and experience. As I have come to appreciate, however, the Amsterdam of shocks is only one part of the city's story.  While it is entirely possible to stroll the Red Light District and interact with countless unionized prostitutes or to order hash and marijuana from a menu in a "coffee shop" (contrary to rumor, coffee shops are still open to foreigners in Amsterdam), it is equally possible to explore the numerous institutions of high culture that enrich the city--the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum being among two of the greatest artistic storehouses in all of Europe.  The opposite of "seedy" might also include a visit to the moving Anne Frank House or to the Royal Palace or to the beautiful Vondelpark.  A canal cruise is also a nice way to take in the 17th century town houses, which line the canals and are considered to be architectural masterpieces.  Or, of course, you can seek out one of the many great restaurants or cafes that dot the city and enjoy a delicious glass of Jenever gin with some delicious Dutch cuisine.  The important point is that Amsterdam really does have something for everyone; you are truly FREE to create the kind of experience that you believe will be most memorable.  Amsterdam is worth not just one visit, but several.  So if you have never been to Amsterdam or even if you have, join us on this wonderful and very affordable autumn in Amsterdam 2019.
