Soulful Southern Italy: Capri, Ravello on the Amalfi Coast and Napoli plus Paestum and Herculaneum with Lucy Rapoport

Campania is one of the most beautiful and magnificent parts of southern Italy.  Encompassing such remarkable places as Naples and the Bay of Naples, Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and Herculaneum, Campania is stunning not only for its scenic landscape--Vesuvius towers over the region like a looming giant--but also for its history and distinctive culture.  Things seem to move more slowly in southern Italy, where locals and tourists alike tend to embrace the moment and to appreciate the azure sea, fresh produce and the best limoncello in the country.  Sunbathers, Vespas, and pizza are ubiquitous, as are the archaeological remains of a lost Roman civilization. This tour, which we have named "Soulful Southern Italy," is designed for the discerning, reflective traveler, who wants to experience the best of Campania and the island of Capri at a leisurely pace in excellent accommodations with a respect for the sense of timelessness that pervades the region.

Our journey, which will have three major components, will begin on the magical island of Capri.  After landing in Naples, we will take the local ferry to the Marina Grande and check into our hotel located near the main town of Capri.  Although flooded with day trippers from the mainland, the island transforms itself into something extraordinary when the last boats of tourists depart.   As nighttime settles in, the famous Piazzetta (Piazza Umberto I) comes to life with locals engaging in the passeggiata (evening stroll) and restaurants opening their doors to familiar faces and newcomers alike.  During the day, you can select a wide variety of activities to keep you busy:  visit the famous Blue Grotto, take a relaxing and picturesque chair lift ride to the top of charming Anacapri, or explore the island on foot discovering such wonderful sites as the Villa Jovis, the former estate of the Roman Emperor Tiberius.  Tiberius loved Capri so much that he ruled the empire from here for nearly a decade (27-37 A.D.).  Staying a few nights in Capri is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have and is the only way truly to appreciate its many splendors.  Day trips are too rushed and superficial to do justice to the island.  You must "become a local" fully to appreciate this mountainous jewel of the Mediterranean.

After our three nights on the island of Capri, we will return to the mainland and travel along the spectacular Amalfi Coast before  arriving at our next amazing retreat, the glorious town of Ravello.  Perched high above the coast, Ravello overlooks the villages of Minori and Maiori and offers incredible views of the world below.  Although it will take a bit of an effort to get to Ravello (we will offer shuttle service from lower Ravello where our hotel is located to upper Ravello), the rewards will be immediately apparent, as this oasis in the sky offers serenity and tranquility on a level that will certainly appeal to your aesthetic sensibility.  Your time in Ravello will be spent simply enjoying your surroundings, although on one of your full days there (three nights), we will be offering a guided tour to the ancient city of Paestum (Poseidonia), which is located not far from Salerno.  Situated on a lovely grassy plain, the Greek ruins that exist at Paestum date from the 6th century B.C., and the magnificent Temple of Neptune (circa 450 B.C.) is one of the best-reserved Greek temples in the world.  We will also have time to  visit the National Archaeological Museum of Paestum before returning to Ravello to enjoy yet another Italian sunset.

Our last stop on our Soulful Southern Italy adventure will take us to the city of Naples (Napoli), which we will use as a base to explore the lost town of Herculaneum. Like Pompeii, Herculaneum was destroyed during the volcanic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D.  Vesuvius killed most of the town's 5000 inhabitants, but the volcanic mud that covered the town ended up preserving many of the structures underneath.  The excavations offer an eerie look at what life must have been like 2000 years ago.  Our visit to Herculaneum will be followed by a group lunch at one of Napoli's famous pizza restaurants and then a visit to one of the richest museums on the planet, the spectacular National Archaeological Museum of Naples, which houses countless treasures from the excavations at Pompeii, Herculaneum, Stabia and the rest of the region of Campania.  On your free day, you may choose to take a full day excursion to the island of Ischia, or, if you are up to the challenge, do some hiking to the rim of Vesuvius' crater, or simply enjoy your last bit of time shopping and strolling through the colorful old quarter of the city.

We are confident that after your ten days or so in southern Italy, you will return to the USA relaxed and possessed of a sense of awe for what you have just experienced.  Sign up now to enjoy a different kind of Italian adventure!  Spaces are limited.  (This tour is fully-escorted by Italian specialist Lucy Rapoport, who has been leading and managing our Italian tour groups for over fifteen years.)
