Trieste and Treviso:  Adriatic Italy and the Charms of Slovenia (December 1-11, 2027)

Trieste is one of Italy’s most compelling hidden gems—a graceful port city set between the Adriatic Sea and the limestone cliffs of the Carso. Once the prized maritime gateway of the Habsburg Empire, it still carries a distinctive Central European elegance: broad boulevards, handsome neoclassical buildings, and a café culture so refined that coffee has become an essential part of the city’s identity. Trieste has long drawn writers and thinkers—James Joyce, Italo Svevo, and Umberto Saba all found inspiration here—and that creative spirit lingers in its bookshops, grand cafés, and sunlit piazzas. Its wonderfully diverse culinary traditions reflect centuries at the crossroads of Italian, Austrian, Slovenian, and other Central European cultures, creating a cuisine quite unlike that found elsewhere in Italy.

Our stay in Trieste offers time to enjoy the relaxed rhythm of its waterfront, where locals stroll along the Molo Audace and magnificent Piazza Unità d’Italia opens dramatically toward the sea. We’ll visit the romantic Miramare Castle, built for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian and surrounded by beautiful gardens overlooking the Adriatic. Trieste’s location also provides the perfect opportunity to venture into neighboring Slovenia, where our excursions will include the enchanting capital of Ljubljana, the spectacular underground world of Postojna Cave, and the historic Lipica Stud Farm, birthplace of the celebrated Lipizzaner horses. With the sea on one side and the rugged Karst landscape on the other, Trieste combines Italian warmth with the fascinating legacy of the old Habsburg world.

We then travel west to spend three nights in lovely Treviso, one of northern Italy’s most appealing and often overlooked cities. Encircled by medieval walls and crossed by picturesque canals and waterways, Treviso offers graceful arcaded streets, frescoed buildings, lively piazzas, and an inviting historic center that rewards leisurely exploration. Long associated with the Venetian Republic, the city retains the elegance of the Veneto while offering a quieter and more intimate experience than nearby Venice. Treviso is also at the heart of one of Italy’s great food and wine regions—the home territory of Prosecco and radicchio and a city that proudly claims an important place in the story of tiramisù. Its bustling cafés, traditional osterias, canals, markets, and evening passeggiata provide a wonderful opportunity to experience the pleasures of everyday Italian life. Together, Trieste and Treviso offer a journey of remarkable contrasts: Habsburg grandeur and Venetian charm, Adriatic landscapes and medieval streets, historic cafés and regional cuisine—all in two of northeastern Italy’s most distinctive and rewarding cities.
